What is a layering system?

A layering system consists of three main components: a base layer, a mid layer and an outer layer. Each of these layers plays a specific role in keeping you warm and protected from the elements.

The system has three main functions: to wick sweat away from the skin, trap body heat, and protect you from the weather. Each part of your clothing serves a different purpose, working with the other layers to keep you warm, dry, and comfortable. An effective layering system lets you adjust and regulate your body temperature when active, resting or when weather conditions change.

What are base layers made from?

Typically made from materials like polyester or merino wool, base layers are chosen for their moisture-wicking and fast-drying properties.

Polyester is lightweight, dries quickly, and is easy to care for.

Merino wool is a natural fibre that's breathable, odour-resistant and provides warmth even when wet.

The choice between these materials depends on your activity, duration, and expected weather conditions. Lightweight base layers are great for warm climates, while thicker options provide extra warmth for cold environments.

Avoid cotton as a base layer as it retains moisture, making you feel clammy and cold.

Mid layer: insulation

What are mid layers made from?

Mid layers come in various materials, including fleece, synthetic insulation, and down insulation. Each have unique benefits.

Fleece mid layers are available in various thicknesses, offering lightweight warmth for high-output activities and more substantial insulation for colder conditions.

Synthetic insulation mid layers are warm and resilient, making them ideal for wet-weather activities.

Down insulation is excellent for lower-output activities in cold, dry conditions, offering exceptional warmth-to-weight ratios.

Types of outer layers

Hardshells are the most weather-resistant option, offering waterproof and windproof protection.

Softshells prioritize comfort, breathability, and movement, making them a great choice for various activities and changing seasons.

Windshells are lightweight and ideal for fast-paced activities in breezy conditions.
